How to make comparisons in Chinese?
Making comparisons in Chinese can be confusing without practise. We know.
The grammar isn’t too difficult, but its just different enough from English that it requires practise and regular use for you to become comfortable with it. If Chinese lessons aren’t an option, don’t worry! You can still take the HSK test (and pass) with ease by learning our basic explanation.
Examples of comparisons in Chinese
You’re in China learning Chinese trying to compare two items in a shop to work out what to buy.
Let’s imagine you’re deciding between two apples 🍏🍎
One apple is [bigger] than the other.
One is [sweeter] than the other.
How do you make the comparison in Chinese? The shop assistant won’t automatically know what characteristics you prioritise.
Fear not – use the simple but effective grammar 比 (bǐ)!
Example comparisons using 比
We recommend watching the video for a more in-depth explanation and listening practise, but as a simple outline, here is how to use the structure:
🍏 +比 (bǐ) + 🍎 + Adj. (big / sweet / delicious / etc.)
Object 1 + 比 + Object 2 + adjective.
example:
这个苹果比那个苹果大
zhège píngguǒ bǐ nàgè píngguǒ dà
This apple is bigger than that apple.
